What to Put on Your Year 12 Jersey
The complete design guide for Australian school leavers. What's on the front, what's on the back, and the details that make a jersey worth keeping for decades.
Front of the jersey
School crest or logo
Most year 12 jerseys lead with the school crest on the left chest. It's the first thing people see in a group photo, so keep it crisp — our designers redraw low-resolution crests print-ready at no extra cost.
School name and year
Across the chest or arched above the crest: the school name in bold type, with the graduating year (e.g. '26) either beside it or underneath. Keep it readable at a distance — this is the detail that dates the jersey decades later.
Sublimated patterns
Hoops, vertical stripes, split panels or quartered designs — the base pattern sets the tone. Classic hooped reads rugby-club traditional; split panels feel modern and bold. Browse our design gallery to see how each pattern sits with different school colours.
Back of the jersey
Nickname or surname
The centrepiece. Most students go with a nickname — it's the bit everyone remembers. We recommend 12 characters or fewer so the print sits large and legible above the number. Longer names work, they just shrink to fit. See our nickname ideas for inspiration.
Student number
A large printed number beneath the nickname — usually the student's sports number, a lucky number, or their position in the year roll. Numbers read clearly from the back row of a group photo.
Year or class tagline
Some schools add the graduating year ('26) or a short class motto across the lower back. Keep it short — one line max — so it doesn't compete with the nickname and number.
Layout tips for group photos
Centre everything on the back. Symmetrical layouts photograph better than off-centre prints. We pre-proof every back layout against a mock group-photo grid so you can see how the names read at distance before production locks.
Sleeves and sides
Sleeve prints
Small crests, house symbols, or year numbers on the sleeve cuff are popular detail touches. They're subtle in person but show up in close-up photos.
Side panels
Contrast side stripes in a second school colour slim the silhouette and add movement when students walk. Most designs use the accent colour here.
Collar details
V-neck or crew with contrast tipping in the secondary colour. Small, but it frames the face in every photo.
Inside the jersey
Year motto or quote
Some committees print an inside collar tag or lower-front panel with a year-group quote or inside joke — visible only when the jersey is lifted or worn open.
Signatures list
Less common on jerseys than jackets, but a printed 'signatures' panel inside the front can list every student's name in small type. It's a nice keepsake detail.
Colour choices
Start with school colours
Your school's primary and secondary colours are the anchor. Most designs use the primary as the base and the secondary for hoops, stripes or accents.
Pick one accent
A third colour — gold, white, or black — gives contrast for text and crest outlines. Two or three colours max is the sweet spot; more than that and the design starts to feel busy.
Look at real examples
Browse our design gallery to see how schools with similar colour palettes have laid out their jerseys. Navy and sky, maroon and gold, black and red — there's likely a template close to your school already.
What to avoid
Illegible fonts
Script and overly thin typefaces look elegant on screen but disappear in a group photo. We stick to bold, sans-serif fonts for nicknames and numbers — readable from 10 metres away.
Too many elements
Crest + school name + year + nickname + number + motto + sleeve print + side stripe = visual noise. Pick three focal points and let the rest support them.
Inside jokes that won't age
A reference that killed in Term 1 can feel confusing by graduation. Test your motto or tagline against 'will this still make sense at the 10-year reunion?'
Clashing colours
Neon accents on a muted school palette rarely work. If your school colours are conservative, stay conservative — a clean, classic jersey ages better than a trendy one.
Frequently asked questions
What should I get on my year 12 jersey?+
Most students put their nickname across the shoulder blades, a number underneath, and their school crest and year on the front. Keep it simple: crest + school name + year on the front; nickname + number on the back.
What do you write on a year 12 jersey?+
On the front: school name and graduating year. On the back: your nickname or surname and a number. Some schools add a short motto or tagline on the lower back or inside panel.
What to put on the back of a leavers jersey?+
A nickname or surname centred across the back, with a large printed number underneath. Some year groups add the graduating year or a one-line tagline below the number.

How long can a year 12 jersey nickname be?+
We recommend 12 characters or fewer so the print sits proportionally above the number. Longer nicknames still work — they just render smaller to fit inside the print area.
Do all students have to have the same thing on their jersey?+
No. Every student can have a different nickname and number. The front design (crest, school name, colours) stays the same for the whole year group; the back is personalised per student.
